  The album’s eight tracks present a soundscape of tumbling percussion, breathy vocals and a lush sheen of melody. Sonic layering creates an eerie wasteland of hisses, slaps and whipcracks; disjointed ballroom dance tempos mix with droning rhythms.
  
  Field recordings from Manila are mixed into the album, which aims to explore the tensions between tempo and arrangement.
  
  “Manila has a serious problem with noise pollution,” says Auspicious Family’s Fred Sandoval. “You could almost argue that we here have a culture that races towards deafness. A large quantity of sounds are mechanical; the cavernous drone of a basement generator or the distress of an antiquated plumbing system.”
  
  For Sandoval, part of this nostalgia can be traced back to discovering records as a child at his anaesthesiologist grandfather’s house the mountain province of Baguio, far north of Manila.
  
  His grandfather’s collection, which included both American and Filipino records, had a psychedelic eclecticism which inspired this album. “My favourite recording from that collection is a 33RPM advisory on the administration of anaesthetics and psychoactive drugs pressed on pulp,” says Sandoval.
  
  Sandoval is ambivalent about Manila’s current music scene. “I believe that there is a prevailing aversion to individuality and the unfamiliar in Filipino culture from centuries of indoctrination. This I think has also resulted in the loss and revision of our own history,” he says.
