Chinabot artist Auspicious Family has teamed up with French sound artist Laure Boer for a collaborative split EP, Wayward Symmetry, created during Boer’s 2019 artist residency in Manila (Philippines), Auspicious Family’s home city.
Spanning dark ambient, noise, industrial and Krautrock, Wayward Symmetry shifts through atmospheric and textural experiments, each artist finding a meeting point between their two unique musical styles. The two return to each other on the final track, the live recording Brouillard, in which a haunting vocal cuts across atmospheric drone and improvised compositions.
Boer’s two-month artist residency in Manila, supported by the Goethe-Institut, CTM Festival and Musicboard Berlin, was designed to create a dialogue between her own work and the sound art of the Philippines. She performed in a number of clubs and festivals with local electronic musicians, including Auspicious Family.
The duo played for the Closing Concert: Spectres for WSK Festival in Manila in October 27 at Rajah Sulayman Theater, Intramuros in collaboration with NUSASONIC and CTM Festival.
Nusasonic is taking the initiative to invite several platforms exploring sound art from Southeast Asia and Europe, Goethe-Institut aims to strengthen the dialogue between the people involved in creating and shaping what experimental sound cultures look like today, especially through meaningful collaborations.
Boer’s work with him is collected in Wayward Symmetry, which contains an original track from each artist, a collaborative track between the two and a live recording of a performance they made together. Although Boer has since returned to her adopted home of Berlin, the two artists continue to collaborate from afar.

It was a bit too much and samey by the end for me, but if you like dark atmospheres, if you are really interested in sound design or you enjoy the challenge of music that tries to wear you down, you should definitely check this record out.
I loved the echo-drenched drums and percussion and synths and hard to describe sounds on this, but it stays with the same sonic ideas for too long for me to enjoy to try to withstand the harsh wall of sounds minisculebarber
